For Fifth Grade Families
Please see guidance below from DOE Middle School Enrollment. Scroll down for information on applying to private/independent schools.
Important dates: the Middle School application opens in the fall, likely October. Offers are released in April.
Once the application window has opened, current fifth grade students in NYC can apply. Here’s how:
- Log in to your MySchools.nyc account. Use MySchools to explore middle schools, apply, and get your offer.
- Learn about your child’s middle school options.
- Families can list any New York City public middle school on their application. Students continue to have priority to their zoned program (if they have one) and to programs in their district. Families should include programs for which they have a priority, but are welcome to include others.
- Browse programs: while logged into MySchools, use the “Search” tab to explore middle school programs, and save favorites by clicking the stars next to their names.
- Visit schools: learn about schools of interest by going to an open house or school tour. Schools post open house and tour dates on MySchools’ Events Calendar, or you can visit a school’s website or contact them directly.
- Apply by the deadline! List programs in your true order of preference, with your favorite choice as #1. A strong application includes programs in the district(s) where your child lives or goes to school — there’s no limit to how many programs you may list. You can submit your application:
- Online with MySchools.nyc
- Through your child’s current school counselor or a Family Welcome Center (nyc.gov/FWC)
- If you apply online, you’ll get a receipt by email and in your MySchools account. If you apply through a counselor or Family Welcome Center, be sure to request a copy of your receipt.
Students applying to Mark Twain I.S. 239 (21K239) and District 21 talent test and audition programs must submit a Request for Testing by November 8 to be considered for admission.
