Applying to Middle School

For Fifth Grade Families

> Please see guidance below from DOE Middle School Enrollment.

> Scroll down for information on applying to private/independent schools.

Important dates:

  • October 9: Middle School application opens.

  • November 8: Deadline to register to test for Mark Twain I.S. 239 and District 21 Talent.

  • December 20: Middle School application closes.

  • April 9, 2025: Middle School Offer Release.

The middle school application for 2025 is now open and the deadline to apply is Friday, December 20, 2024. Current fifth grade students in NYC can apply. Here’s how:

  1. Log in to your MySchools.nyc account. Use MySchools to explore middle schools, apply, and get your offer.

  2. Learn about your child’s middle school options.

    • New this year: Families can now list any New York City public middle school on their application. Students will continue to have priority to their zoned program (if they have one) and to programs in their district. Families should include on their application programs for which they have a priority, but are welcome to include other programs.

    • Browse Programs: While logged into MySchools, use the 'Search' tab to explore middle school programs. Save your favorites by clicking the stars next to their names.

    • Visit Schools: Learn about schools of interest by going to an open house or school tour. Schools will post open house and tour dates on the MySchools’ Events Calendar. You can also visit a school’s website or contact them directly to find out more.

  3. Apply by December 20! List programs in your true order of preference, with your favorite choice as #1. A strong middle school application includes programs in the district(s) where your child lives or goes to school. There's no limit to how many programs you may list. You can submit your middle school application one of the following ways:

    • Online with MySchools.nyc.

    • Through your child’s current school counselor or a Family Welcome Center (nyc.gov/FWC).

    • If you apply online, you’ll get a receipt by email and in your MySchools account. If you apply through a counselor or Family Welcome Center, be sure to request a copy of your receipt.

Students applying to Mark Twain I.S. 239 (21K239) and District 21 talent test and audition programs must submit a Request for Testing by November 8 to be considered for admission. More information can be found on our website at Middle School Auditions.
